Frequently asked questions about power cables

Is it possible that a power cable affects sound quality?

This is a good question. Even so, we are not able to answer it to the satisfaction of all people as it’s just not possible to refer to proven statements. Several theories exist in this matter, however, they have rather a character of hypothesis.

During the development of VOVOX® power cables the target wasn’t to realise a theoretic concept but rather the implementation of a simple but very surprising finding: Cables based on the same design principles, using the same selected materials because our analog signal cables do have an audible effect as well if used as power cables. This is even more surprising as power cables don’t transmit an audio signal. So it isn’t our intention to proof something with our power cords. We simply want to offer our customers the possibility to share a discovery and to participate in its advantage.

How can it be that a short piece of a power cord should matter, even though current is transmitted through an almost endless chain of inferior cables to the ultimate user?

Observations show the evidence that there is an interaction between the electrons and the conductor in which they are travelling causing audible differences. The current’s velocity of electrons is relatively little in a cable (it’s just the transmission of the signal wave that travels extremely fast as a transversal wave). As we are talking about alternating current, the electrons flow forth and back. Consequently, the electrons within the cable and the audio component are exchanged only on a limited length of the cable. The electrons with a certain distance to the device, however, will never reach the audio component. In fact, they never leave the cable. For the consuming device the interaction between the electrons and the cable on the last piece of the cable is crucial, whereas the quality of the cable in a bigger distance is of minor importance. This theory leads us to two consequences:

  • It’s the last power cord, directly attached to the consuming device that is most important.
  • To have an optimal effect, this last power cord needs to have a certain minimum length. Only then, the postulated interaction will show its full potential. Practical tests proved that this length is 1.8 m (6 ft) for power cables. If the cable is shorter, the effect will be reduced, is it longer the effect won’t become much bigger.
  • Depending on the internal wiring there are audio devices with minimal or even no audible effect of the power cord. Anyway, we recommend to make tests. Depending on the application the effect of the power cords can be more or less amazing.

Does the VOVOX® power cable complies with legal demand for line cords?

VOVOX® power cords are based upon massive conductors as all VOVOX® sound conductors. This makes the cables rather inflexible and they cannot be bent many times without damaging their conductors. The VOVOX® power cord is conform to legal demand when used according legal regulations which means:

  • read the insert wrapper and follow security advice.
  • use this power cord ony to connect audio devices in recording studios or in your private home.

What are the audible benefits of VOVOX® power cords?

The audible effect of VOVOX power cords is very similar to the one known from the analog signal cables from our range

  • precise spacial imaging
  • improved resolution
  • improved definition, especially of trebles and bass
  • increased dynamics

As mentioned above, the effect depends on the device the cables are used for. It can be stunning, but there are also cases where the audible effect is only minimal. We, therefore, suggest to make tests.
